The sport is characterised by its unique rules attire and rituals The wrestlers are dressed in a distinctive outfit known as a mawashi which is a type of loincloth made from silk or cotton Before every bout the wrestlers perform a series of elaborate rituals that include throwing salt to purify the ring and stomp their feet to intimidate their opponent They also have a unique way of walking called shiko which involves lifting their legs high in the air and stomping them back down

Sumo wrestling is not just a sport in Japan It is a way of life and many young boys aspire to become sumo wrestlers The life of a sumo wrestler is highly regimented and strict and they must follow a set of rules and regulations They must eat large amounts of food to maintain their size and strength and live in communal training facilities There are six tournaments held every year and they are watched by millions of people around the world The tournaments are held in Tokyo and last for 15 days
